Lisa is TERRIFIC. I took her meditation class at the Dunwoody Nature Center and it was life-changing. I highly recommend it. I expect her yoga class is equally amazing (and I WILL get there in 2010, Lisa!)

These cities are helpful when guaging where we stand for Dunwoody. Pattie, you have been a wonderful leader and Dunwoody has come a long way in being accountable for sustainable practices currently and for the future!

Hey Pattie, I know you're listing retail businesses, but what about local service providers. Oh yeah, that would be me, your friendly local yoga and meditation instructor at www.dunwoodyYoga.com Thanks for giving me the forum to say that. : ) Lisa

Sustainability Commission Welcomes Two New Members

Joe Seconder, citizen activist who spearheaded the Action Plan for a Bicycle-Friendly Community, will be joining the Sustainability Commission immediately, taking Mitch Garber's place. Mitch was instrumental in establishing the vision for the sustainability commission and served a critical role in the achievement of numerous ARC Green Community measures, and will be sorely missed. What's more, the addition of the bike rack at City Hall (by January 1, 2010) is predominantly because of Mitch (he d… Continue

2020 Vision for The City of Dunwoody

It looks like we're going to end our first year with about 100 points toward ARC Green Community certification (we need 175 for the bronze level, which we hope to achieve, with your help, in 2010).

Here is my draft list of sustainability goals for ten years out (2020). Thoughts on this list?

Sustainability Commissions Nationwide

We're putting together our 2010 Plan for the Sustainability Commission right now, and will be doing a 2020 Vision document next year. This got me curious about other cities and their sustainability commissions. I thought I'd share some links, in case you are interested:

How to Keep Almost 50% of the Money You Spend Circulating Locally

When you "buy local", you keep $45 circulating in the local economy, as opposed to $13 when you buy at a national chain. "Buy Local" this holiday season and keep your dollars close to home, right here in our local economy. (Local businesses tend to use other local businesses for supplies and services, so there is a large multiplier effect when citizens patronize local businesses.)

I'm trying to make it easier for you to do that. I sent the following email to Joan Shumaker about a month ago and… Continue

Scroll ahead to the totals per category and overall at the end, if you want the quick bottom line. (We haven't quite nailed those 5 education points yet, but we will shortly.)

Stay tuned--the 2010 strategic plan will be up by December 1. By January 1, I hop… Continue

The Chicken Thing

Dear Dunwoody Homeowners Association, City Council, Mayor, Community Council and Planning Commission:

As you know, I am heavily involved in the local food movement. The increased availability of local food improves health, environmental education, economic sustainability, and food security. Pet chicken-keeping is an easy way for a family to achieve these objectives. Friends of your friends most likely have chickens right now in Dunwoody. If you don’t know about them, it is a testament to how un… Continue

Hi Pattie, I live in a complex and they took the recycling bins away. I've been trying to get them to bring them back (they would save money if they would) but so far, no.
The closest place to take things is Morgan Falls. But, I was told that the one on Satelite has re-opened and that might be closer. It's totally a drag not to have it here! Marina

Hi Pattie, Thank you for your note. I started a note to you and my computer had to be turned off due to lightning (love those little bolts!) and lost your note! I would love to meet with you sometime and find out more about what Dunwoody is doing for green initiatives and for recycling. We really need to get this new city "green" and everyone able to recycle. Right now I have to drive quite a distance to take plastic, glass, cardboard, etc. and using all that gas isn't a good thing. I hope we can get this in motion for our community. Let me know when you have some time and I'll meet you at Goldbergs for a bagel and coffee! Marina.

No my "borrowed" seedlings didn't make it! I thought it was my lack of gardening expertise, though, not the chilly winter! I really need a community garden--my yard just gets NO sun! Thanks for all that you do!! You are an inspiration to us all!
