Joe Seconder, citizen activist who spearheaded the Action Plan for a Bicycle-Friendly Community, will be joining the Sustainability Commission immediately, taking Mitch Garber's place. Mitch was instrumental in establishing the vision for the sustainability commission and served a critical role in the achievement of numerous ARC Green Community measures, and will be sorely missed. What's more, the addition of the bike rack at City Hall (by January 1, 2010) is predominantly because of Mitch (he d… Continue

We're putting together our 2010 Plan for the Sustainability Commission right now, and will be doing a 2020 Vision document next year. This got me curious about other cities and their sustainability commissions. I thought I'd share some links, in case you are interested:
Bloomington, INEugene, OR… Continue

When you "buy local", you keep $45 circulating in the local economy, as opposed to $13 when you buy at a national chain. "Buy Local" this holiday season and keep your dollars close to home, right here in our local economy. (Local businesses tend to use other local businesses for supplies and services, so there is a large multiplier effect when citizens patronize local businesses.)
I'm trying to make it easier for you to do that. I sent the following email to Joan Shumaker about a month ago and… Continue

Click here. These quarterly reports will now be in the ARC checklist format so you can see exactly how points are stacking up. Scroll ahead to the totals per category and overall at the end, if you want the quick bottom line. (We haven't quite nailed those 5 education points yet, but we will shortly.)
Stay tuned--the 2010 strategic plan will be up by December 1. By January 1, I hop… Continue

Dear Dunwoody Homeowners Association, City Council, Mayor, Community Council and Planning Commission:
As you know, I am heavily involved in the local food movement. The increased availability of local food improves health, environmental education, economic sustainability, and food security. Pet chicken-keeping is an easy way for a family to achieve these objectives. Friends of your friends most likely have chickens right now in Dunwoody. If you don’t know about them, it is a testament to how un… Continue

Great article in NY Times about the growing popularity of Zero Waste Zones (thanks for forwarding it, Amie), including a prominent mention of the Atlanta restaurant, Ecco (a Dunwoody resident is a partner there, by the way).
FYI, the Dunwoody Community Garden at Brook Run is a Zero-Waste Zone. Not only does this mean that we ask that you take any non-compostable waste with you when you l… Continue

This short video shows the kind of outside-the-box thinking that can change the world. Period. You simply can't watch this and not want to do this yourself. I'm already thinking about how I would recruit several friends and we would figure out how to play Ode to Joy. And, of course, this evokes that famous scene from the FAO Schwarz toystore from the movie Big, with Tom Hanks. Watch the video and you'll see what I mean.
As I've said at several different sustainability meeting… Continue
